About the Client

OzHarvest is Australia’s leading food rescue organisation, collecting quality excess food from commercial outlets and delivering it directly to more than 1300 charities supporting people in need across the country.

Project Background

In Australia, the Government estimates that food waste costs the Australian economy AUD 20 billion each year. Over 5 million tonnes of food ends up in landfills, enough to fill 9,000 Olympic-size swimming pools.

Design Focus

This project addresses the challenge of waste reduction in the hospitality sector. The design should encourage people to think differently about food waste, particularly in environments of high disposable consumption such as festivals.

Pop-Up Eatery for OzHarvest

CONCEPT

People have been addressing food waste problem for years. We often hear about how many tonnes of food have been sent to landfill and how many people in underdeveloped countries are still suffering from hunger. However, we rarely get a chance to learn how to actually reduce food waste in everyday life.

In this project, I tried to inspire people in a playful way. I designed a lot of interactive activities in this pop-up store to share tips and tricks of reducing food waste. For example, when people order their food, they are encouraged to choose the right portion by selecting their own size of plates and mugs.

The yellow cheese has bold colour that is similar to OzHarvest’s brand colour. By using this eye-catching colour and exaggerated shape, I hope this pop-up store can easily attract people to come and have some fun.

Three configurations can be dissembled and turned into different function units, including dining, gaming and educating. Since our client Ozharvest requested to locate these configurations in their warehouse or a festival circumstance easily, I tried to make them very flexible to fit into different location.
